Punch Card

A Punch Card is a loyalty card where each transaction earns a physical or digital "punch" toward a reward (typically 5-10 punches for a free item). Digital punch cards replace paper with a wallet pass — no physical fraud, automatic punching at POS, real-time push when the customer is one punch away from redemption.

Paper punch card problems

Paper punch cards have inherent failures: customers lose them, fraud is trivial (counterfeit punches), no data captured (you don't know who your customers are), no communication channel (you can't push offers between visits), no analytics. The average paper card has <30% completion rate; digital wallet versions hit 50-70%.

How digital punch cards work

Same UX as paper but delivered as an Apple Wallet or Google Wallet pass. Customer installs once (6 seconds). Every transaction punches automatically via POS integration or merchant tap at checkout. When the customer hits the threshold, the pass shows the redeemable reward and pushes a notification.

When to use digital punch cards

Best for daily-to-weekly visit cycles: coffee shops, bakeries, nail salons, barbershops, casual dining, car washes. Less ideal for variable-ticket retail (use cashback instead) or low-frequency services (use service plans or tiers instead).
